Somehow the connotative associations of ‘cheap’ and ‘airfare’ are held largely implausible by all and sundry. Buying a Hong Kong air ticket for the right price with a tight budget can be a problematic situation. Most airline websites and their ticket pricing schemes will seem like a labyrinth of mumbo jumbo. Too many hidden charges crop up once you get closer to the actual transaction and eventually you end up paying a fortune which you could have otherwise saved had you played it a tad differently.

The Internet is king to find a flight

Internet is almost the BEST way to find cheap flights, there are plenty of websites that Offer Cheap Flights To Hong Kong. Commission fees will of course be lower online than with a physical branch. Also, it is certain that you will not seek personal advice from an agency. You just want the ticket.

Compare Flights

This is the most efficient way to find cheap flights to Hong Kong. There are several online flight comparators such as Kayak or Skyscanner. It’s totally just a simple task to find them, simply browse flights To Hong Kong on the websites. Kayak compares prices of thousands of routes and hundreds of airlines. In addition, these comparators of flights offer interesting options such as choosing a flight with or without stopover and maps to see destinations based on their price. In addition, getting the best price on the day becomes easier. The search tool is generally very user-friendly too. Some of them are in fact specialized in finding low-cost flights.

Verify your flight on the website of the airline

When you have identified cheapest ticket on the comparator, go check the price on the website of the airline company. It is sometimes cheaper!

Anticipate and buy flight ticket in advance

In theory, it is best to book at least two months in advance. This is the best way to get a better price. In practice, however, this is not always the case. Often it is seen that booking an air ticket just a couple of hours before departure time proves to be the cheapest bargain.
Also, avoid weekends for a flight. Always prefer a departure or arrival weekday other than a Friday or a Monday. Aircraft is less crowded on the other weekdays.

Travel off-peak periods

Summer is often the most expensive time to buy a plane ticket. January and February, on the other hand, appears as the most suitable time to book a flight to Hong Kong. If you avoid holidays and vacation periods, you avoid the crowd as well the cost.

Beware of extra costs

This is particularly evident in the case of low cost flights. Often fees may be equivalent to the price of the ticket. Costs for extra baggage may also be high.

Be active on websites

Sites such as AirfareWatchdog.com and Flightfox are immensely useful if you are a frequent traveller to Hong Kong and always on the lookout for the best bargains. Keeping an eye on their regular updates and signing up for email offers will ensure you are always aware of the best deals on cheap flights to Hong Kong.

Insurances for flight travel

They are always available. On some sites, the boxes are sometimes pre-checked. Ask yourself if you really need it, and whether you are already covered by other insurance policies.

For more detailed for each activities/places, click on the title and you’ll have more pictures and information.

Top 10 Things to do in Hong Kong

1. Victoria Peak – Great View

Even the Hong Kong Tourism Board says, “If there is only one thing you can do in Hong Kong, go to the Peak. If there are many things you can do here, still go to the peak.” It’s totally true. Only that you will need the luck of a good weather (which is not difficult in Hong Kong) and the patience to line up for transportation uphill.

2. Dim Sum – Chinese Style Food

If you don’t even know what DimSum is … here’s some clue (WIKI). In Hong Kong, there are many Chinese restaurant that serves top quality dimsum, you shouldn’t miss that for sure.

3. Local Restaurant “Cha Chaan Teng” – Hong Kong Style Food

If you never heard of Dim Sum, I guess there is a great chance you don’t know what Cha Chaan Teng is (WIKI). But if I have to choose from Cha Chaan Teng and Dim Sum personally, Cha Chaan Teng it is my friend.

4. Horse Racing

How can you miss Horse Racing (WIKI)?? Try not to gamble too much though.

5. Learn some Cantonese

You may already know some mandarin, but Cantonese .. ? It’s almost totally a different language. Hong Kong people speak English. But not all of them speak good English. Especially the older generation, taxi drivers, restaurant waiters, they may all try to speak to you but it’s another question whether you understand them. Having said Cantonese is one of the most difficult languages to learn, it is always handy when you know a few phrases.

6. Ding Ding !

Ding Ding is an old Tramways in Hong Kong. Hong Kong people like to call it Ding Ding because when this Tram goes, it produce some kind of Ding Ding sound frequently. It’s kind of slow compared to other transportation in this modern years, but who cares? It’s a great way to enjoy the view of Hong Kong and … IT’S CHEAP !

7. Lan Kwai Fong

Ask any locals for a nightlife recommendation. 9 out of 10 answers you will hear ‘Lan Kwai Fong’, the little L-shaped ally in Central. Lan Kwai Fong is a little expatriate area inside Hong Kong, home to over 90 restaurants, bars and clubs, packed with foreigners, locals and celebrities especially on Friday nights and weekends. On Halloween, Christmas, New Year and Lan Kwai Fong’s beer festival the crowd gets to a maximum of both persons per square meter and laughter per drink.

8. Karaoke

I know it’s from Japen, but Hong Kong people love it, and it’s one of the popular activities that local will always do. You may find it in place like Neway Karaoke, Red Mr KTV or even local bar. Ask local for them.

9. Wong Tai Sin Temple

I love Wong Tai Sin Temple. Its background being a home to three religions of Taoism, Buddhism and Confucianism and its beautifully craved and ornamented buildings makes it a must-visit.

10. MTR (Metro in Hong Kong)

I know it’s impossible that one will miss MTR Hong Kong, but in case you’re too rich or travelling with a tour package, I have to include it.

The Ritz-Carlton Hong Kong hotel is easy to find. Simply look up the sky and identify the tallest building on the Kowloon side – yes, that’s it! Well, isn’t that the ICC (International Commerce Centre)? You are not wrong. The Ritz-Carlton Hong Kong shoots up from the 102 floor up to the top of ICC. It was the world’s highest hotel when it was opened in 2011 and was beaten down the rank by its Marriot counterpart in Dubai. But who cares? The Ritz-Carlton Hong Kong is tall enough to stun you with its breath-taking views of the Victoria Harbour.

Planning your stay?

The Ritz-Carlton Hong Kong is everything you would expect from a Ritz-Carlton hotel – and more. The hotel facilities and service levels are top-notched. The hotel starts from the 102nd floor so you won’t even have to worry asking a room in the high floors. If you are meeting you friends at the lobby, remember to be specific whether you are meeting them at the 9th floor entrance or the main lobby on the 102nd floor.

The best selling point of the hotel is of course its view. The deluxe rooms give you a sweeping city and Lion Rock Mountain view, the deluxe harbor room gives you a spectacular habour view. Both are just amazing! What I love most is the Nespresso coffee machine in every room – it simply make leaving the room even harder. Do NOT forget to visit the pool and the gym on the 118th floor. Swimming and running over all these skyscrapers – feel like in a Jackie Chen movie!

One little draw-back is that the location of the hotel is not extremely convenient. Though it is connected directly to the giant Elements shopping mall and the Kowloon MTR station, the ‘connection’ is indeed quite a long walk in the maze and the metro line brings you nowhere but the airport. The best way to commute from the hotel would be taxi. The location of the hotel is very central just with poor connection, so taxi fees are very reasonable.

If you are looking up reviews online, do check the dates of the reviews so not to confuse yourself with the former Ritz-Carlton Hotel Hong Kong in Central that closed down in 2008.

Drinking on the Ozone

Bar Ozone, as its name says, locates at the top (118th) floor of Ritz-Carlton Hong Kong, making it the highest bar in the world. If you are not staying at the hotel, at least make Ozone a visit! Indulge yourselves with signature cocktails and exotic Asian tapas with DJ beats and a 270-degree view of the Hong Kong city and Victoria Harbor. You might have heard of the Sky 100 observation deck, which is indeed on the 100th floor, right downstairs from Ritz. With the price of the entrance ticket to Sky 100, you may better get yourself half a drink at Ozone, where an outdoor terrace is also available. The bar is absolutely cool and is popular among the locals. Make a dinner booking will ensure you a table. Dress code for men applies after 9pm.

A truly ‘high’ tea

High tea, the British saying of a luxury afternoon tea, may be best for its name at Cafe 103 or the Lounge and Bar of Ritz-Carlton Hong Kong. The 103 cafe, formerly named as the ‘Chocolate Library’, specializes in a signature chocolate afternoon tea and lunch or dinner buffet. The Lounge and Bar at the 102nd floor sets the atmosphere with giant chandlers and live band performance. Both present all sorts of beautiful tea canapes together with a selection of specialty teas that will surely melt a lady’s heart. Price level at around HKD300 per person with drinks and service charges included. Do make a phone reservation and request a window seat.

Spending – 5

The official language at Lan Kwai Fong is English. Menus are in English, service persons are mainly foreigners. So you don’t have to worry being cheated as you are not alone! A lot of the time bars are so packed that people cannot get in. An extremely smart and economical solution came up when a 7-eleven was opened a little down the alley. People simply buy bottles and cans of alcohol, stand and drink on the slope outside the shops, creating an unofficial extension of the bars with its loud music and free-flow of people.

View – 1

There’s not much of a view in Lan Kwai Fong, just lots and lots of ‘Gwai Lo’s (Cantonese for foreigners, literally ‘ghost people’, but is now accepted as a cool naming). Yet there are also many local visitors, and seems to be the only place conservative Hong Kong girls show more of their flesh.

Convenience – 5

Lan Kwai Fong is in Central, the central of Hong Kong. Best way to get there is to walk up slope from Central MTR (metro) station. By the time you leave probably the metro is no longer running. Overnight buses and speedy (or speeding) mini-vans are available down the streets. Or if you are too drunk to find your route, tones of taxis are waiting right at the corner of the street, with vomit bags readily available.

History / Culture – 2

Lan Kwai Fong was once a street for street hawkers, for flowers, for marriage-arrangers, until ‘the father of Lan Kwai Fong’ German-Canadian businessman Allan Zeman gave it a make-over. Now it is Hong Kong’s most popular entertainment destinations. It is a city in the city of Hong Kong, a foreign culture unique to Hong Kong. If you wander a few blocks away from the main street, you will still find traditional dim sum restaurants, and Chinese herbal medicine stalls. Maybe this is where Hong Kong’s true culture, where East meets West, lies.

Overall – 3

Hong Kong is a dynamic city, and Lan Kwai Fong is where the action is! Do check it out! Just beware of the crowd especially during festive seasons. A serious accident happened Lan Kwai Fong in 1993 because it’s too crowd and more than 15,000 were celebrating the New Year’s Day. But after that, it become much less dangerous and saver in recent years. Let’s go and have fun there !!

Review and Rating on Cheung Chau

Favour a glass of Long Island Ice Tea? There’s also a ‘Long Island’ in Hong Kong. The island is located 10km southwest of Hong Kong Island, a relatively small island with a relatively small population. By the way, ‘Cheung’ means long in Cantonese, and ‘Chau’ means island. So calling it Cheung Chau is enough, ‘Cheung Chau Island’will mean ‘Long Island Island’, weird. The island is also nick-named as ‘dumbbell island’ for its shape. It’s a relaxed island with a good mix of Chinese and Western culture, natural sceneries, good food and good company.

Spending – 3

There are no 7-elevens nor Circle-Ks on Cheung Chau. The only and largest supermarket is the local chain Parkn’shop near the ferry dock. The locals shop groceries and everyday items at small stalls along the main street, and the fresh market complex that holds more than 200 vendors. Prices are reasonable, and you usually get smiles and small talks for free. The island is also famous for its seafood, where they are caught and cooked mostly the same day. Prices are friendly, and quality is among the best in Hong Kong.

View – 3

Blue sky, great wind and waves, great sunshine, less-crowded beaches are the characteristics of Cheung Chau. As the Island is long and thin, it is almost impossible to find a spot without seeing any part of the sea.

Did you watch the movie Priates of the Caribbean? The Chinese pirate is based on Cheung Po Tsai, a notorious pirate in the South China Seas during the late 18th century who is said to have once commanded a fleet of 600 ships and 50,000 men. Know what? His hidden place is right here at Cheung Chau! Try your luck and you may find some left-over treasures at the Cheung Po Tsai Cave! Nearby the cave are five giant eroded rocks, the biggest reclining rocks.

Convenience – 3

Although Cheung Chau is an outlying island, it is not difficult to reach. Ferries sail from Central pier every 30 minutes. On a high speed ferry it takes 35 minutes to arrive. If you have more time, I will recommend the ordinary ferries with open-top areas that you could enjoy the view and sea breeze for 55 minutes.

Once you stepped your foot on the soils of Cheung Chau, you may notice something abnormal – there are no cars! Bicycles are available for rental at small stalls, but the best way to navigate is on foot.

History / Culture – 5

Although now home to many foreigners, Cheung Chau is an island full of traditional Chinese atmospheres. There’s the Kwan Kung Pavilion, the Pak Tai Temple, and not to forget the annual Bun Festival. The Bun Festival is really one of its kind. Little kids dressed up in traditional customs, raised up high on floats pushed through the streets of the island. Strong men climb up the ‘bun mountain’ competing for the highest bun. Even local Hong Kong people are stunned by the scene.

Cheung Chau is also home to Li Lai Shan, the first and only Hong Kong gold medalist in the Olympics.

Overall – 3

There’s just too much to see in Cheung Chau, but in a relaxing manner. After all the sight-seeing don’t forget to visit the local bars at the main street and cool off under the blue sky.
